Interesting idea, however walking around with a massive camera around your neck makes you look like a tourist. Also without a decent mike with mufflers you will can get lots of problems with wind and movement crackles.
Oh people walk around with cameras all the time (and my S2 is not MASSIVE thank you very much ;-). I live in LA, so tourist, paparazzi, whatever...
Surprisingly the wind filter setting on the camera (though it's camcorder style) worked really well. Movement sounds are easy too. Just stop moving. A couple minutes sitting outside a coffee bean on Santa Monica gave me everything I needed, and nobody looked twice (and I enjoyed a cup of tea, now that's "working").
Also walking around with a decent mic (like my 416 or 184), means walking with a boom or shock mount and phantom power deck. Walking around with field recording gear like that in LA, I would probably be stopped and asked for a permit.
Even with an H4, I'd still be calling more attention to myself, as it's some Ghostbusters looking gadget.
Is the camera "pro"? Nope. Not at all. Can you get surprisingly usable results out of it? You bet!
Hi there, what did you need? people walking and street sounds?
The camera idea sounds good, never thought of that.
Ive thought about binurial mics in the ears.. Scanner does it that way sometimes apparently.
Yeah, that was the idea, and I really didn't want to have to buy a recorder.
The camera worked out surprisingly well...
